COVID-19 in the Cayman Islands
Update – 27 May 2020
Synopsis of CIG Press Briefing

1.              Three (3) positive cases.
-       One (1) person had direct contact to a positive case.
-       Two (2) persons contracted through community transmission and contact tracing is under investigation.

As of 27th May, the cumulative number of positive cases of COVID-19 is 140 and is broken down as follows:
Active – 72 (Symptomatic – 1; Asymptomatic – 71)
Recovered – 67
Deceased – 1

2.              The local fish market has reopened at the South Terminal on the waterfront. Persons can only visit the fish market on their prescribed “letter day” and are required to wear a mask and adhere to social distancing requirements.

3.              The Passport & Corporate Services Office will reopen on 10th June on Wednesday and Thursday only each week for the hours of 9:00am – 1:00pm.
The office will allow persons to collect passports that have returned from HM Passport Office in the UK but will not be accepting new applications.

4.              An Emergency Evacuation Charter has been confirmed for India and will take place within the next three (3) weeks.

5.              The Governor’s Office is still finalising details for another air-bridge flight to London which will take place during the first half of June.
Discussions are still underway for Emergency Evacuation Charters to Jamaica, Colombia, and Canada.

6.              The Minister of Finance, Hon. Roy McTaggart presented an update on the country’s financial position and projected scenarios caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Best-Case Scenario will see:
-       GDP decrease: 11.4%
-       Unemployment rate: 11.6%
-       Displaced Jobs (Caymanians): 2,772
The Worst-Case Scenario will see:
-       GDP decrease: 12.2%
-       Unemployment rate: 12.3%
-       Displaced Jobs (Caymanians): 2,981
Inflation for 2020 has been re-evaluated and is estimated to be 0.4%.
