COVID-19 in the Cayman Islands
Update – 3 April 2020
Synopsis of CIG Press Briefing
1. ONE (1) POSITIVE CASE.
- Person lives in same household as another positive result.
As at 3rd April, the number of positive cases of COVID-19 is at TWENTY-NINE** (29) and is broken down as follows:
Active – 27 (with 13 “clinically better”)
Recovered – 1
Deceased – 1

2. The Commissioner of Police, with authorisation from His Excellency the Governor under the Police Law, has extended the Hard Curfew for a further fourteen (14) days until 17 April 2020. The details of the Hard Curfew are:
- 7:00pm – 5:00am each night for Monday through Saturday/Sunday
- A full 24-hour (full day) Hard Curfew for each Sunday. (12:01am Sunday – 5:00am Monday)

3. The Soft Curfew (Shelter-in-Place) provisions have been extended until 17 April 2020. The following amendments have been made:
- If your last name begins with A – K, you may leave your residence for essential services on Monday/Wednesday/Friday.
- If your last name begins with L – Z, you may leave your residence for essential services on Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday.
- Persons are not permitted to leave their place of residence outside of their assigned day of the week based on the alphabetical system save for the following exceptions:
o Employees of essential services
o Healthcare facilities/Doctor’s office/Pharmacies
o Collecting take away food from restaurants
o Exercise
- No person shall visit a residential care facility without written permission from the CMO;
- Allowance for travel due to court-ordered custody arrangements;
- Allowance for attending court or police station as required

4. The RCIPS has now been given authorisation to write tickets to citizens for breaches of Soft Curfew rather than warn for prosecution. The tickets will range from $250 – $750 and persons will have twenty-eight (28) days to pay or defend in court. The penalty can increase to a maximum of $1,000 and/or six (6) months in prison. The offences and relevant penalties are:
- Not restricting the number of persons in a business – $250
- Not maintaining required social distance of 6ft – $250
- Any action in contravention to Regulation 6(1) which includes strata pools, gyms, boating, etc – $500
- Permitting a visit to a residential home-care facility without CMO permission – $500
- Remaining in a place not their legal residence without lawful authority – $500
- Undertaking travel to essential services on a day other than your permitted day – $500
- Holding a public meeting/festive gathering – up to $750
- Opening an establishment/business not exempted – $750
- Minimart or convenience store with more than six (6) persons inside – $750

5. Cabinet has approved and authorised the HSA to employ medical personnel trained and qualified in Cuba to increase the pool of available doctors and nurses.
