COVID-19 in the Cayman Islands
Update – 24 April 2020
Synopsis of CIG Press Briefing

1.              Four (4) POSITIVE cases.
-       Two (2) persons contracted through community transmission (no direct link identified)
-       Two (2) persons had direct contact to confirmed positive cases

As at 24th April, the number of positive cases of COVID-19 is SEVENTY (70) and is broken down as follows:
Active – 61 (Symptomatic – 33; Asymptomatic – 22; In-patient – 6)
Recovered – 8
Deceased – 1

2.              The Legislative Assembly met yesterday (23 April) and passed all proposed amendments of the relevant laws to assist the country during the pandemic.
These amendments include considerations for pension withdrawals, vehicle inspections, electronic job advertisement through WORC, severance pay, and work permit holders.

3.              An Emergency Evacuation Charter is being planned to repatriate Mexican citizens to Cancun, Mexico next week (27 April – 1 May 2020).
Interested persons should register for this flight by emailing emergencytravel@gov.ky.

4.              There is now an online registration form available for foreign citizens or Caymanians to register for repatriation from/to the Cayman Islands. The link for this online form will be provided by the Governor’s Office as soon as possible.

5.              The Premier reiterated the notice from the Ministry of Education that the closure of all educational institutions has been extended until the end of the 2019/2020 academic year (26 June 2020).
Educational Institutions means all “early childhood care and education centres, all schools, all tutoring centres, all technical and vocational training centres, all colleges and universities, etc”.
Although physically closed, the current academic year is still in effect and online/distance learning should continue.

6.              There will be no press briefing over the weekend (25-26 April 2020). The next scheduled press briefing is scheduled for Monday, 27th April 2020.
